California grown, the Burlington Family is a musical group that hails from Los Angeles. Echo’s of the city’s folk, pop, country, and punk scenes past and present are evident upon hearing the Burlington Family.
Like its country and blues predecessors, the Burlington Family came into existence via the Church. As the 20th century came to a close founding members Kevin Casey and Ian Wagner began blending spoken word with guitar while performing during talent nights at Hollywood Presbyterian Church.
The Family’s first significant break came when Ain’t no Grave, a gospel cover included on their first record began receiving radio airplay on the Watusi Rodeo, former Los Angeles rock station Indie 103’s acclaimed eclectic American roots rock & alternative country show, hosted by original DJ Doc Holiday. The exposure gave the Burlington Family an opportunity to share bills with many acclaimed Los Angeles based artists, such as I See Hawks in LA, honky tonk hero, Mike Stinson, and legendary rockabilly guitarist, Danny B. Harvey.
A fortuitous meeting between Kevin and guitarist Patrick Cleary (Silver Phial, the Digs!) led to a lineup change. The new duo immediately began a year long residency at Cole’s, the historic downtown bar considered by many to be the oldest bar in Los Angeles dating to the early 20th century. At Cole’s the Burlington Family began to attract attention from many of the artists and poets inhabiting the area. Also during this time the Burlington Family was given the opportunity to make a record produced and recorded by Michael Deming, recognized for his work with Beachwood Sparks, recorded on the Sub Pop label, and the Lily’s, recorded on Sire records.
Through growth and change the Burlington Family continues to do its thing, prowling the musical venues of Southern California while staying true to its original intent with a sound that’s simultaneously joyous and subversive.
